Today's most advanced fighter jet, the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, is about to receive its first major technology upgrade. A hint at the proposed aircraft upgrades appeared on the Twitter account of General Mark D. Kelly, head of the United States Air Force's (USAF) Combat Aviation Command.

Published in late April, the note shows an illustration of three F-22s with slim pods and stealthy fuel tanks on their wings to shoot down an unidentified missile.

According to Air Force Magazine, the air-to-air missile is the AIM-260 JATM (Advanced Joint Tactical Missile), a new long-range missile developed by Raytheon and used by the F/A-18E. / F Fighters, F-35 and F-22.

The F-22's stealth fuel tanks appeared in the USAF's FY23 budget, and the pods could be an electronic warfare system or an infrared search sensor.

Upgrading the Raptor through mods would be a cheaper way to adapt it to a new battlefield. Low Drag Tank and Pylon (LDTP) fuel tanks will replace the current common tanks and maintain low drag and stealth capability.

Another aspect suggested by the update, greater operational autonomy, could be linked to operations in the Pacific as the Chinese threat grows, and the PLAAF has the most advanced stealth fighter outside the states, the colony, the J-20.

The updated F-22 Raptor can also be used as a test bed for technologies that are part of NGAD, the USAF's 6th generation fighter aircraft currently under development.

In service since 2005, the Lockheed Martin fighter jet is scheduled to be retired around 2030 after a long period of development.

In March, the USAF sent Congress in Washington asking for permission to retire 33 of its oldest Raptor fighters from service starting in 2023, saying it would be too expensive (about $50 million per aircraft) to upgrade the models to the new configuration. If approved, the proposal would reduce the number of Raptors to 153.
